The Hidden Cost
The answer is yes — and the reason is sitting in your manager's chair right now. Research shows that 70% of employee engagement is directly tied to their immediate manager. Yet most companies promote their best individual contributors into management roles and then leave them to figure it out alone.

I was on a webinar this morning with Steve Sapato, where he spoke about the transition from being a good manager to becoming a great one. One statement that really stayed with me was:
“Great Managers are Made, not Born.”
What I appreciated most was how Steve presented many of the management principles I have practiced throughout my career in a way that brought them together and made them easy to understand.
Over the years, I have managed large teams and complex operations, and I have always looked for resources, mentors, and ideas that could help me become a better leader. No matter how much experience we have, I believe there is always something more we can learn.
I’m looking forward to reading Steve’s book, Great Managers Are Made, Not Born. I have a feeling it will be one of those books I read more than once.
The timing is especially meaningful for me because I am now developing Pine Hall Disabled Veterans, a program designed to help disabled Veterans transition from the VA system into a new chapter of their lives through housing, workforce training, and hands-on light manufacturing.
This project will require more than simply managing people. It will require building a culture where Veterans are respected, challenged, supported, and given the opportunity to rediscover their skills, confidence, independence, and sense of purpose.
That makes becoming a better leader more important to me today than ever before.
Thank you for a great webinar and for introducing me to Steve’s approach to leadership.
